The convention defines North to be at 0 degrees, West to be at 90 degrees azimuth and so on. Additionally, if you specify a shower azimuth angle of, say, 90 degrees, this means that the shower is propagating to the West (i.e., the directions are given by the particle propagation), not coming from the West.
