Geosynchrotron Model PDF Print E-mail
Written by Tim Huege

Visualisation of the geosynchrotron processTwo main emission mechanisms have been proposed in the past for radio emission from EAS: Cherenkov radiation from a charge excess moving with a velocity higher than the speed of light in the traversed medium (the so-called “Askaryan” mechanism motivated by Askaryan 1962; Askaryan 1965) and acceleration of charged particles in the earth’s magnetic field.

While the former is dominant in case of dense media (Buniy & Ralston 2002; Zas et al. 1992; Alvarez-Muniz et al. 2000), polarisation measurements in a number of experiments subsequently supported the dominance of the geomagnetic emission mechanism for radio emission from EAS in air (e.g., Allan et al. 1969). It also seems unavoidable in principle for highly relativistic charged particles moving in the earth’s magnetic field.

Obtaining REAS PDF Print E-mail
Written by Tim Huege

To obtain the REAS code, please send me a message. Please shortly indicate the context in which you plan to use the REAS code. I will then provide you with an account to the restricted download page as soon as possible. Please excuse this somewhat complicated procedure - it is necessary to keep an overview of who is working with the code in case important changes or bug fixes have to be communicated. After you have received your credentials, you can download the following files:

I get error messages when compiling COAST v3r2 with a modern (e.g. gcc 4.3) compiler. PDF Print E-mail
Written by Tim Huege

Newer compilers tend to be stricter than older compilers. While COAST v3r2 compiles flawlessly on most older compilers, compilation can fail on very new ones.

I get error messages during "make", and I do not use a ROOTSYS environment variable. PDF Print E-mail
Written by Tim Huege

Some Linux distributions (e.g., Debian) have install packages for ROOT that do not make use of the ROOTSYS environment variable. When you simply run ./configure and later make in such an environment, you will get error messages relating to missing files.
